Eye Conditions and VASRD Ratings (Alphabetical by Condition)
Aphakia
- Code 6029: The absence of a lens in the eye.
- Rated 30% if one or both eyes are aphakic.
- Can alternatively be rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System, but not both.
- Specific rules for corrected and uncorrected visual acuity apply if both eyes are aphakic.
Cataracts
- Code 6027: Cataracts caused by trauma.
- Rated under the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- If surgery was performed but no new lens was implanted, it may also be rated as aphakia.
- Code 6028: Cataracts not caused by trauma.
- Rated similarly to Code 6027.
Central Nystagmus
- Code 6016: Twitching or excessive movement of the eye caused by nerve conditions.
- Rated 10%.
Chronic Conjunctivitis
- Code 6018: Any other type of chronic conjunctivitis.
- Rated 10% while active and 0% when inactive.
Complete Loss of Eyebrows
- Code 6023:
- Rated 10%.
Complete Loss of Eyelashes
- Code 6024:
- Rated 10%.
Dacryocystitis
- Code 6031: Swelling of the nasolacrimal sac that produces tears.
- Rated based on tear production impairment.
Detachment of Retina
- Code 6008: A condition where fluid seeps under the retina, potentially leading to blindness.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Dislocation of the Crystalline Lens
- Code 6033:
- Rated as aphakia.
Diplopia
- Code 6090: A condition where the eye sees two separate images of one object.
- Rated under the Muscle Dysfunction Rating System.
Ectropion
- Code 6020: A condition where the lower lid turns inside out due to weak muscles.
- 20% for both eyes; 10% for one eye.
Entropion
- Code 6012: Caused by swelling or congestion.
- Rated as iritis, with frequent attacks rated 100% while attacks persist.
- Code 6013: Glaucoma not caused by swelling or congestion.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating.
Intraocular Hemorrhage
- Code 6007: Bleeding within the eye.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Iritis
- Code 6003: Swelling of the iris.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Keratitis
- Code 6001: Swelling of the cornea.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Keratoconus
- Code 6035: A condition where the cornea changes shape over time.
- Rated on corrected vision using medically required contact lenses.
- Minimum 30% for one or both eyes if contacts are required.
Lagophthalmos
- Code 6022: A condition where the eyelids cannot close completely.
- 20% for both eyes; 10% for one eye.
Malignant Cancer in the Eye
- Code 6014:
- Rated 100% while active.
- Once inactive, rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
Optic Neuropathy
- Code 6026: Damage to the optic nerve from conditions other than glaucoma.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System and the causing condition.
Paralysis of Accommodation
- Code 6030: Caused by damage to the oculomotor nerve.
- Rated 20%.
Pterygium
- Code 6034: A condition where conjunctiva fibers grow into the cornea.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
Ptosis
- Code 6019: Drooping eyelids.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Blockage of pupil affects rating:
- Fully blocked: 5/200 vision assigned.
- More than half blocked: 20/100 vision assigned.
- Less than half blocked: Rated as disfigurement under Code 7800.
Retinitis
- Code 6006: Swelling of the retina.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Scleritis
- Code 6002: Swelling of the sclera.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Symblepharon
- Code 6091: Adherence of the eyeball to the eyelid.
- Rated under the Muscle Dysfunction Rating System.
Trachomatous Conjunctivitis
- Code 6017: Bacterial infection causing conjunctival swelling despite treatment.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 30% rating while active.
Tuberculosis of the Eye
Code 6010: Rated as nonpulmonary tuberculosis.
Uveitis
- Code 6000: Swelling of the uvea.
- Rated on the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Minimum 10% rating while active.
Visual Field Impairment
- Code 6080: Contraction of the visual field in degrees.
- Ratings depend on the degree of contraction and whether one or both eyes are affected.
- Example: Field contracted to 5° or less: 100% for both eyes, 30% for one eye.
Visual Acuity
- Rated on best corrected vision using the Visual Impairment Rating System.
- Specific rules apply for differences in prescriptions or near and far corrected vision.
