Burn Pit and Other Particulate Exposure
Veterans who served in the qualifying locations below during the specified time periods will be presumed to have been exposed to the following airborne particulates:
- burn pit fumes and smoke
- sand and dust
- general air pollution
- fuel, exhaust, and mechanical fumes
- smoke from oil well fires
To qualify for the conditions listed below, a veteran must have served in the following locations during the specified time:
- On or after September 19, 2001 in Afghanistan, Djibouti, Syria, or Uzbekistan.
- On or after August 2, 1990 in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the neutral zone between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea, and the airspace above these locations.
For these veterans, if any of the following conditions develop anytime after the veteran’s date of discharge, it will be considered service-connected as of August 5, 2021
Also for these veterans, if any of the following conditions develop anytime after the veteran’s date of discharge, it will be considered service-connected as of April 26, 2022.
- Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, code 6819
- Squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea, code 6819
- Adenocarcinoma of the trachea, code 6819
- Salivary gland-type tumors of the trachea, code 6819
- Adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung, code 6819
- Large cell carcinoma of the lung, code 6819
- Salivary gland-type tumors of the lung, code 6819
- Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung, code 6819
- Typical and atypical carcinoid of the lung, code 6819
To qualify for the conditions listed below, a veteran must have served in the following locations during the specified time:
- On or after September 11, 2001 in Afghanistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Uzbekistan, or the airspace above these locations.
- On or after August 2, 1990 in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, the United Arab Emirates, or the airspace above these locations.
For these veterans, if any of the following conditions develop anytime after the veteran’s date of discharge, it will be considered service-connected as of August 10, 2022.
- Chronic bronchitis, code 6600
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, code 6604
- Constrictive or obliterative bronchiolitis, code 6600
- Emphysema, code 6603
- Granulomatous disease, code 6524
- Interstitial lung diseases, various codes
- Pleuritis, code 6845
- Pulmonary fibrosis, code 6825
- Sarcoidosis, code 6846
- Glioblastoma, code 8002 or code 8021
- Head cancer, various codes
- Neck cancer, code 6819
- Respiratory cancer, code 6819
- Gastrointestinal cancer, code 7343
- Reproductive cancer, code 7628 or code 7528
- Lymphoma, code 7709 or code 7715
- Lymphomatic cancer, various codes
- Kidney cancer, code 7528
- Brain cancer, code 8002
- Melanoma, code 7833
- Pancreatic Cancer, code 7343
