Skin Ratings
The rating system for skin conditions underwent two significant updates: Below are the details of the differences for each relevant code.
Code 7801: Scars on the Body (Excluding Head, Face, and Neck)
- 2002–2008 Rating System
Applies to deep scars or scars that limit motion of the affected body part.- Deep scars: Scars that penetrate below the skin and affect soft tissues.
- Scars can be cumulative for a single rating unless clearly distinct areas (e.g., separate arms) exist.
Rating:
- 144 in² or more: 40%
- 72 in² or more: 30%
- 12 in² or more: 20%
- 6 in² or more: 10%
Code 7802: Superficial Scars on the Body (Excluding Head, Face, and Neck)
- 2002–2008 Rating System
Applies to superficial scars that do not affect soft tissues or limit motion.- Scars are rated based on their cumulative area unless clearly distinct regions are affected.
Rating:
- 144 in² or more: 10%
Code 7803: Superficial Scars with Frequent Skin Breakdown
2002–2008 Rating System
Scars that are superficial (do not penetrate soft tissues) and frequently lose skin over the affected area.
Rating:
- 10%
Code 7804: Superficial and Painful Scars
2002–2008 Rating System
Scars that are superficial and painful to touch.
Rating:
- 10%
Code 7805: Scars Affecting Functionality
2002–2008 Rating System
Scars that affect the function of the body part are rated based on the functional limitation of the affected area.
- Example: A scar on the elbow that limits bending would be rated under the limited motion of the elbow code.
